Heat pump FAQ

Do heat pumps actually work in Southern Utah?
They work exceptionally well here. Heat pumps lose efficiency below about 25–30°F, and our winter design temperature in the St. George area is around 28°F, well within the range where modern variable-speed heat pumps deliver excellent performance. Up in Hurricane and Toquerville where mornings can dip lower, we spec cold-climate heat pumps or pair them with a small auxiliary heat strip for the handful of cold nights per year.
What's the federal tax credit on a new heat pump?

Should I replace my furnace and AC with a heat pump?
Often, yes. A modern heat pump replaces both your AC and your furnace with a single piece of outdoor equipment that's typically 2–4x more efficient than electric resistance heat and competitive with high-efficiency gas in our climate. The tax credits and rebates currently make the math even better. We'll run the numbers with your specific energy rates before recommending.
What's the difference between a ducted heat pump and a mini-split?
A ducted heat pump uses your existing ductwork (or new ducts) to distribute conditioned air, the same delivery method as a traditional AC and furnace. A mini-split (ductless) heat pump has individual indoor heads in each zone, no ductwork required. Mini-splits shine in additions, casitas, basements, or homes where running ducts would be invasive. Both can be excellent choices.
How long do heat pumps last in this climate?
Properly installed and maintained heat pumps run 12–18 years in Southern Utah. The compressor cycles harder than a furnace because it runs both summer and winter, but modern variable-speed compressors are dramatically more durable than the older single-stage units. Annual maintenance (coil cleanings, refrigerant checks, defrost board testing) extends life significantly.
Will a heat pump make my home feel as warm as my furnace did?
It will heat your home to the same setpoint, but the supply air temperature is typically 90–105°F instead of a furnace's 130–140°F. People sometimes describe heat pump air as feeling 'cooler' even though the room is the same temperature. The fix is sizing the system correctly and using slightly higher airflow. Neither costs anything extra, and both should be standard practice.
